Supervision and Appraisal - Making It Person-Centered

Far too many supervision and appraisal sessions are a wasted opportunity, they are often a “tick box” exercise and do more harm than good. People are the most valuable resource that any service based organisation has and the formal supervision and appraisal process is one way to support them to work effectively and efficiently.

The masterclass will focus on making the supervision and appraisal process truly person-centred. This includes how to use simple tools and techniques to design a session which is bespoke to the individual and their current circumstances. This methodology is effective for all types of service and can be used will all variations of the standards forms that are so beloved of organisations.

This masterclass will focus on social care provision although most of the principles covered are applicable to any sector.

This masterclass will enable you to:

  • Define the purpose of formal supervision and appraisal

  • Recognise the benefits of an effective supervision and appraisal system

  • Identify the core components of an effective system

  • Explore the role of; day to day supervision, formal supervision and appraisal

  • Use the form as a planning tool

  • Design a person-centred session

  • Explore the role of reflective practice

  • Develop goals and targets with the team member

  • Explore things that can go wrong and how to address them

Who should attend? Everyone who undertakes formal supervision and appraisal of team members. This masterclass is particularly relevant to; Registered Managers, Deputy Managers, Team Leaders and Head of Department.

Facilitator: Tim has worked in the social care sector since 1987 and various roles which include; adult family placements (now shared lives), support worker, Registered Manager and Responsible Individual. Since 2008 Tim has been a trainer and consultant in the social care sector and delivers training on a wide range of subjects for local authorities and care providers.

Tim also provides a consultancy service which includes; service audits (mock inspections), mentoring for Registered Managers and Providers, strategic advice and support. Tim is a regular chair and presenter at conferences and events for the social care sector and has authored many articles for the care sector publications. Tim provides practical real-world advice and support designed to enable care providers and their team to deliver great care and support to enhance the lives of the people who use our services.
