The Home Observation and Measurement of the Environment (HOME) Caldwell and Bradley (1984; 2003) has been extensively utilised across clinical and research contexts and provides a validated and reliable measure of parenting capacity which can be utilised in a wide range of assessments and provide a measure of change.

This one day Masterclass will provide practitioners with; tools to explore the child or young person’s experiences in their home environment; the skills to administer the 24-hour interview; guidance on how to score the HOME and make a quantitative and qualitative assessment of the child or young person’s experience of care in their home environment; an evidential basis for planning interventions and measuring outcomes.

Key learning objectives:
Participants will learn how to:

  • use evidence-based approaches to assess children and their families
  • score the HOME and identify strengths and difficulties
  • use the 24-hour interview to understand the child’s perspective
  • understand the child’s experience of care and the nature and variety of the child’s day-to-day experiences
  • enable the voice of the child to be heard in assessments
  • make use of knowledge from current research
  • involve children and young people in collaborative discussions
  • develop their direct observation, interviewing and recording skills and techniques
  • understand the parenting capacity of the child’s caregivers
  • gather information on the child’s development, parenting capacity, and family and environmental factors
  • use the HOME with the Assessment Framework.
