Managing and Responding to Freedom of Information Requests

This Conference is now Closed

All public sector organisations are subject to the Freedom of Information Act 2000. This is regulated by the Information Commissioner’s Office, which has already published several thousand decision notices, publicly setting out how it has dealt with complaints about non-compliance.

This masterclass aims to take the attendees though the basic concepts of FOI and its obligations, then to take a deep dive into the most common exemptions, with a huge emphasis on FOI and the release of personal data, which is governed by the Data Protection Act 2018 and the UK GDPR.

The course is deeply interactive, with lots of quizzes and opportunity to ask questions, case studies and illustrations of how FOI exemptions apply to real-world.

It also takes in how to ensure you have good and sensible processes and how to deal with complaints and reviews.

Key learning objectives:

  • FOI definitions, including how to identify a FOI
  • Basic obligations of FOI
  • Understanding cost limits and vexatious requests
  • The most common exemptions with worked examples
  • Personal data deep dive
  • How to have a good process
  • How to do reviews and react to the ICO
  • How to continue your learning and development

Facilitated by:
